SORE JOINTS
The condition of soreness in joints is extremely common and can be debilitating in severe cases. The Latin root for joint is "arthr", thus we derive arthralgia, or joint pain, and arthritis, or joint inflammation from it. Joint soreness has multiple potential causes, depending upon whether the condition is acute (recent), or chronic, traumatically related or the result of joint wear and tear over years. The synovial joints which are also known as joint capsules are smooth ideally and lubricated by fluid functioning much like oil in an engine. Any joint capsule when inflamed and swollen becomes sore since the cartiledge is highly innervated with sensory neurons. In cases where a joint is irritated by a wrenching trauma such as a car collision, fall or overuse syndrome, pain and stiffness result. Depending upon the nature of the condition, ice packs, moist heat, massage or electric stimulation can be very effective in treating the problem, although when the condition is long standing and chronic, it may be more difficult to completely heal the joint capsule. Also when the joint is misaligned, causing abnormal motion and joint lock, pain will eventually occur, and remain until joint integrity returns. In this case, manipulating the joint to restore normal motion is very effective in correcting the problem. There are no magic potions to cure locked joints, although many nutritionists prescribe glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate which have been shown to help joints regenerate when torn or worn down. Manganese, a primary constituent of both, is a trace mineral known to help joint health quickly and efficiently. As in all musculo-skeletal health conditions, treating the cause, not merely the symptoms results in long lasting outcomes. We use a combination of therapies often at the same time to achieve the best results, including medical massage, laser therapy, synaptic and interferential stimulation and a variety of chiropractic techniques to correct joint misalignment. Once the pain is controlled, specific exercises to strengthen and stretch the injured area are taught until the patient can perform them at home.
